Read/Watch/Listen To This: Tater Tot Warriors Edition

The premise is pretty simple: We each give you one thing to watch, one thing to listen to, and one thing to read over the weekend.

Happy long weekend, Ravishers!

We won't keep you from your BBQing too long, but we do have some pretty choice World Wide Web finds to share with you. So sit back, grab a mojito (or a glass of chocolate milk — I don't know your life), and read/watch/listen to these Internet gems while your sunscreen soaks in.

I have thought about “Do Your Friends Know You're Broke?” every day since reading it this past weekend. The way the author talks about growing up broke and dealing with the unspoken pressure of that within your family twisted my heart in all the right ways.

She's also really good at balancing the importance of taking personal responsibility for finances, while still acknowledging the other forces at work that urge us to perform class in a way that reaches beyond our means.

Dear reader, Do you know how fucking scary it is to look at your internet history? I mean, just today's internet history? My god, people. The amount of internet I consume is just... dystopian. And I'm pretty sure my usage is, like, average.

I had to go into my history to find this link, because I knew I was reading something captivating yesterday when I should have been working, but I could not for the life of me remember what it was.

I eventually found it, nestled softly between Facebook statuses: A first-person account of taking your aging, anxious mother to a weed convention.

Side note: I also read this fantastic profile/commentary on the trend of otherworldly, ethereal, purposely forgettable dreamy boy rock by Amanda Petrusich. Petrusich is my favorite woman rock writer of this generation. (If you haven't read Do Not Sell At Any Price, now's the time to get that on your summer reading list.) I'm only somewhat acquainted with Vile's work and marginally aware of Gunn, but Petrusich's voice is so lively, she could rewrite the Denny's menu and her analogies and adjectives would be so on-point that I'd drink it right up.

This chihuahua protecting her tater tot added a solid 5 years to my life, I'm pretty sure. Joni (our editor-in-chief) and I both deduced the origin of the tater tot to be Sonic. We don't fuck around when it comes to tater tots.

IS THIS REAL? Please tell me this is not real. Because no. No no no no no.

Admittedly, I did not watch this all the way through. Perhaps because I am a Crazy Dog Lady and, if I'm being honest, I could very easily become the kind of person who buys and uses and wholeheartedly endorses a product like this for being "so much better for the animal." Too real, Licki Brush. Too real.

Listen

I'm going to be real with you: I've been listening to the Ray of Light album on repeat all week.

When I get stressed, I revert to comfort listens. This is definitely one of them. I will defend Madonna to the ends of this earth, not even sort of sorry about it.

Karen Meat, Karen Meat, Karen Meat. I know I already wrote about her a few weeks ago, but I was looking through old emails and found myself digging into her Bandcamp history this week, and goddamn, she is so good. I'm partial to “Animal Crackers” and “What Have They Done To My Song, Ma?” which took me to this sweet, deeply sad spot that I didn't know lived inside me.
